Makanda Boardwalk

The Makanda Boardwalk is a restored block of storefronts dating back to the 1890's. The area has become a beacon for local artists and craftspeople who work in all types of mediums--from blown glass to bronze sculpting and everything in between! The unique shops of the Makanda Boardwalk are one of southern Illinois' finest hidden treasures.  
The Makanda Boardwalk is located near Giant City State Park, seven miles south of Carbondale, in the picturesque town of Makanda, IL. Visitors have an opportunity to enjoy the following shops along the Boardwalk:

  • The Makanda Trading Company 
  • Rainmaker Studio: Artist Dave Daris creates spectacular sculptures, jewelery, fountains, and more out of bronze and copper. Mr. Daris' sculptures can be seen at many locations along the wine trail.   • The Makanda Country Store provides a welcome break from the heat with hand-dipped ice cream cones. The shelves are stocked with locally produced and imported specialty items like hot sauce, jams, and coffee.

  • The Smelly Hippe

  • The Smelly Hippie is where you will find the coolest handmade tie-dye's, candles, soaps, lotions, bath salts and more. .

  • The Makanda Country Store is mostly known for helping visitors beat the heat with hand-dipped ice cream. You'll also find a wonderful selection of coffees, hot sauces, jams, and other locally produced products.
